Concrete, Brick, and Stone Work Best Practices

We’re committed to the durability of your concrete, brick, and stone surfaces and that’s why we use top-quality materials and proven techniques. Follow these best practices to make your project last.

Concrete, Brick, and Stone Guidelines

Curing:

  • After finishing the surface, we follow an old-school curing process to maximize strength. The surface is covered with burlap and polyethylene plastic to prevent rapid drying.

  • Curing typically takes 24 to 48 hours, depending on the season.

  • Do not walk on the surface until it’s completely dry and we’ve removed the burlap and polyethylene plastic.

Sealing:

  • We use a penetrating sealer to protect the surface.

  • Sealing usually takes 12 to 24 hours, depending on the time of year.

  • Temporary discoloration may occur but will fade within a couple of months as the sealer sets.

Weight Restrictions:

  • Foot traffic: safe after 24 hours

  • Light vehicles: can drive on the surface within 7 days

  • Heavy trucks or machinery: avoid for 60 to 90 days

Cleaning:

  • Use mild soap and water; avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.

  • Pressure washing is effective but can wear down the surface slightly—use it with caution.

  • We recommend cleaning your surface every 2 to 3 years, based on your preference and the amount of dirt build-up.

Protecting:

  • Re-seal every 3 to 5 years, depending on usage. We offer re-sealing services upon request, but the surface must be cleaned beforehand. If you need cleaning recommendations, we’re happy to provide them.

  • Keep the surface free from motor oil, leaves, and other staining agents.

  • Use furniture pads or mats to prevent scratches and stains.

Snow and Ice:

  • Avoid rock salt, this will damage the surface.

  • Use fertilizer pellets (highly recommended, and most likely available from landscapers) or calcium chloride pellets for de-icing.

  • For traction, sand or kitty litter is harmless and works well but won’t melt ice.

Vegetation:

  • Planting near concrete is fine, but keep trees at a distance to prevent root damage.
